Key points

  • Bangkok has both fertility units inside general hospitals and standalone fertility clinics. Neither model is better in itself.
  • Thai law, as enacted in 2015, limits IVF to legally married couples. Expect to show a marriage certificate.
  • Packages bundle different steps. Compare itemised written quotes, not headline prices.
  • Some published prices apply only to certain patients, such as residents or people travelling in. Read the conditions.

Buyer's guide

How to compare IVF and fertility clinics in Bangkok

Choosing an IVF clinic means choosing a medical team, an embryology laboratory and policies you may live with for years if embryos are frozen. Headline prices and success figures are the easiest things to compare and the easiest to misread: packages include different steps, and clinics report results in different ways.

This guide sets out what to check before you commit, from eligibility under Thai law to laboratory standards, success figures, quotes and travel. The right plan for you depends on your age, test results and history, so discuss it with a fertility specialist.

Eligibility and the law in Thailand

Assisted reproduction in Thailand is governed by the Protection of Children Born from Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act B.E. 2558 (2015). As enacted, the Act limits treatment to legally married couples, bans commercial surrogacy and trade in eggs and sperm, and requires each surrogacy arrangement to be approved by a committee.

The law is under review. In July 2026 the Department of Health Service Support opened public consultation on a revised bill which, as reported, would extend access to married same-sex couples following the 2024 marriage equality law, allow some foreign married couples to use surrogacy, and permit export of eggs, sperm and embryos with committee approval. A draft is not the law: ask each clinic which rules apply on the date you start, and what documents (such as a marriage certificate and its translation) it needs from you.

Hospital fertility unit or standalone clinic

IVF is offered both by fertility units inside general hospitals and by standalone fertility clinics. A hospital unit can call on other departments on site, such as emergency care, anaesthesia and obstetrics, which may matter if you have other health conditions or if a complication such as ovarian hyperstimulation needs inpatient care. A standalone clinic may offer more continuity with one team.

Neither model is better in itself. Ask who will see you at each visit, who performs egg collection and transfer, where you would be admitted if something went wrong, and who answers the phone out of hours.

The laboratory and the embryologists

Much of what happens in an IVF cycle happens in the laboratory, out of sight. Ask who leads the embryology team, how many cycles the lab handles each year, and how eggs and embryos are labelled and checked to prevent mix-ups.

Some clinics hold external laboratory accreditation, such as RTAC certification (the Australian and New Zealand scheme) or ISO 15189 for medical laboratories. If a clinic mentions one, ask to see the current certificate and check that it covers the IVF laboratory itself.

Ask whether embryos and eggs are frozen by vitrification (rapid freezing) or slow cooling, and what the lab's survival rate after thawing is. If time-lapse incubation is offered, note that the UK regulator, the HFEA, rates it as having no effect on the chance of a baby based on current evidence.

How to read success rates

A success rate depends on what is counted and who is counted. Check three things before comparing any two figures: the outcome (a positive pregnancy test, a clinical pregnancy seen on a scan, or a live birth), the denominator (per cycle started, per egg collection, or per embryo transferred), and the age group.

Regulators urge caution. The US CDC says comparisons between clinics should be made with caution and may not be meaningful, because clinics treat different patients and use different methods. The HFEA advises using success rates as a rough guide rather than a prediction, and looking at the multiple birth rate alongside the birth rate. A clinic's figures do not tell you your own chance; ask the specialist about that directly.

Itemised costs and package small print

Packages bundle different steps, so the cheapest headline price is not necessarily the cheapest cycle. Ask for an itemised, written quote based on your own test results and compare the same lines across clinics.

Check the conditions too: who the package applies to (some are limited by nationality or residence), how long it is valid, what is refunded if the cycle is cancelled or no embryo is suitable for transfer, and whether it can be combined with insurance.

Add-ons deserve particular care. PGT-A (genetic screening of embryos) is often sold as a way to improve results, but the HFEA rates it red for improving the chance of a baby for most patients, while rating it green for reducing miscarriage. The HFEA says a clinic should be able to show you the evidence for any treatment it offers.

  • Pre-treatment tests and consultations
  • Stimulation medication, and the cost of any dose above the package allowance
  • Monitoring scans and blood tests
  • Egg collection, anaesthesia and ICSI
  • Embryo culture, time-lapse and genetic testing (PGT-A)
  • Freezing, annual storage and each frozen embryo transfer (FET)

Embryo transfer policy

Twin and triplet pregnancies carry higher risks for both the pregnant person and the babies, and ESHRE's guideline favours transferring a single embryo. The HFEA notes that single embryo transfer is usual practice for most patients in the UK, but not every country follows it.

Ask how many embryos the clinic usually transfers for someone of your age, whether it will put its recommendation in writing, and what its multiple birth rate is.

Travelling for treatment, storage and moving embryos

A full cycle runs over several weeks, and a freeze-all plan splits it into two trips. Ask which tests and early monitoring scans can be done at home and sent to the clinic, how many days you must be present,. Ask for copies of your records, and how complaints are handled: the HFEA notes a home-country regulator cannot help with treatment abroad.

If embryos are frozen, read the storage terms before you start: the annual fee, how you will be reminded, and what happens if you cannot be contacted or stop paying. Moving embryos or eggs out of Thailand is regulated, and the 2026 draft bill proposes committee approval for export. Ask the clinic what is required today, who arranges transport, and whether a clinic in your home country can legally receive them.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Am I eligible for treatment here under current Thai law, and which documents do you need from me?
  2. Who will be my doctor at each stage, and who performs egg collection and embryo transfer?
  3. Who leads your embryology laboratory, and what external accreditation does the laboratory itself hold?
  4. Do you freeze eggs and embryos by vitrification, and what is your survival rate after thawing?
  5. What are your live birth rates for patients in my age group, per cycle started and per embryo transferred, and for which years?
  6. What is your multiple birth rate, and how many embryos would you usually transfer for someone like me?
  7. Can I have an itemised written quote covering medication, monitoring, ICSI, culture, freezing, storage and a frozen transfer?
  8. Which add-ons are you recommending for me, and what evidence supports each one?
  9. What is refunded if my cycle is cancelled or no embryo is suitable for transfer?
  10. Which steps can be done at home, and how many days do I need to be here?
  11. What does embryo storage cost each year, and what happens if you cannot reach me?
  12. What is required to move frozen embryos to a clinic in another country?

Warning signs

  • A single success figure with no age group, no years and no explanation of what was counted.
  • Promises or guarantees of a baby, or a quote of your personal chances before you have been assessed.
  • Pressure to transfer more than one embryo to improve the odds, or reluctance to state a transfer policy.
  • A package price that cannot be itemised in writing, or vague answers about what costs extra.
  • Add-ons presented as routine or essential without evidence of benefit for your situation.
  • Unclear answers about eligibility under Thai law, or an offer to work around it.

Questions people ask

Who can have IVF in Bangkok?

Under the Protection of Children Born from Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act B.E. 2558 (2015), treatment is limited to legally married couples, and clinics ask for proof of marriage. A revised bill went to public consultation in July 2026; Nation Thailand reported that it would extend access to married same-sex couples. It is not yet law. Ask each clinic in writing which rules apply on your start date.

Should I choose a hospital fertility unit or a standalone clinic?

It depends on your needs. A hospital unit has emergency care, anaesthesia and obstetrics in the same building, which can matter if you have other health conditions or develop ovarian hyperstimulation. A standalone clinic may mean seeing one team throughout. Ask who performs egg collection and transfer, and where you would be admitted if something went wrong.

Why do IVF package prices differ so much?

Packages draw the line in different places. Some include ICSI, medication up to a cap, freezing or a frozen transfer; others charge for these separately. Genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A) can account for much of the gap between two packages. Ask for an itemised quote based on your own test results.

How long do I need to stay in Bangkok?

Clinics give different estimates. A fresh cycle can mean a stay of several weeks; a freeze-all plan splits treatment into two shorter trips. Ask which tests and early monitoring scans can be done at home, and how many days you must be in Bangkok for each stage.

Can I compare clinics by their success rates?

Only with care. The US CDC says comparisons between clinics may not be meaningful, because clinics treat different patients. Check what each figure counts (pregnancy or live birth), per what (cycle started or transfer), and for which age group and years. Discuss your own chances with a fertility specialist.
